This past weekend, I headed to Moncton, New Brunswick, for the Legs for Literacy Marathon—an event that’s become a staple in the community since its humble beginnings in 2000. What started as a local group of runners' vision for a community race has become an exciting, charity-driven event that doubles as a Boston Marathon qualifier. Knowing that every step contributes to local school literacy programs added a new meaning to the race.
Pre-Race Shenanigans: Game Night Vibes
The night before the marathon, I kicked back with my brother and a good friend for some much-needed relaxation. We dove into some of our favourite games and spent the evening catching up, sharing stories, and enjoying the moment. There’s something special about those pre-race nights when you can feel the excitement buzzing in the air. It was the perfect chill session to set the tone for what was to come the next day.
Race Day: 5K Fun and Marathon Magic
Sunday morning arrived with the kind of energy only race day can bring. I supported my fiancée and friend as they prepared for their 5k run. I got some incredible footage capturing the anticipation at the starting line, the rush during the race, and the celebratory moments after. And let me tell you, they crushed it! Both crossed the finish line at the 30-minute mark—no small feat for a 5k, especially in a race filled with many participants. It was one of those moments where the excitement in the air rubs off on you, even if you’re on the sidelines.
The event itself was a blast, with runners of all ages and abilities coming together for a cause bigger than themselves. Whether they were out there for personal bests or just enjoying the camaraderie, the spirit of the race was infectious. I was so glad to capture those critical moments on camera—future memories in the making.
Post-Race Celebrations: Breakfast at Pur and Simple
After the race, we all rode that post-run high, so naturally, we had to reward ourselves. We made our way over to Pur and Simple for breakfast, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The food was delicious, from perfectly cooked eggs to those savoury breakfast poutines that just hit differently after a morning full of energy and adrenaline. After an event like this, there’s something magical about indulging in a well-earned meal with friends and family. It’s as if every bite is a mini celebration of the day’s achievements.
Reflecting on a Weekend Well-Spent
Looking back, the weekend was one for the books. The Legs for Literacy Marathon brings out the best in runners and highlights the importance of giving back to the community. Knowing that the event supports literacy programs for local schools added so much depth to the experience—it’s more than just a race; it’s a chance to help shape the future.
Between the great company, the exhilarating race atmosphere, and some delicious breakfast, Moncton was the perfect backdrop for a weekend full of fun, excitement, and meaningful moments. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event!
If you're ever in Moncton or looking for a community-driven marathon with an incredible cause, mark Legs for Literacy on your calendar. Whether you're running, cheering, or just there for the vibes, it's one of those events that leaves you feeling proud to be part of something bigger.
